ROW80 – 2012 – First Round – Goal Setting

I’m excited to join ROW80′s first round of 2012 (Jan 2nd to Mar 22nd). The New Year requires new resolutions. And new resolutions require discipline and accountability. I tried to focus on challenging but doable goals. ROW80 allows me to have clear and measurable goals.

This little logo will be part of my life for the next few months

Here are my ROW80 goals for the first quarter of 2012.

Writing goals:

  1. Write every weekday. Minimums: 1k words/day; 5k/week. Bonus goal: up the word count after outlines below are done.
  2. Detailed (chapter-by-chapter) outline of sequel to codename BLUE.
  3. Rough outline of new WIP.
  4. Re-write career plan.

Social Media goals:

  1. Blog schedule: Mon/Fri, regular blog posts; Wed/Sun, row80 updates. Bonus goal: guest posts.
  2. Have at all times a stash of 15 blog topics and 5 blog posts ready in advance.
  3. Support fellow writers. Blog hopping, commenting, facebook, twitter: every day, but no more than 2 hours/day.

Personal goals:

  1. Exercise at least 4 times a week (at least 2 runs and 2 workouts).
  2. Study at least 2 hours/week               .

Now, let’s do this!

OK all you people are making me want to write a list. Darn you! *shakes fist*. I just joined row80…so now I suppose I better write something lol. Good to know people who are in the same boat though. You can do it!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Melinda, I already feel energized by joining. You should too.
Have I mentioned I love your “Demons and Dark Chocolate” tagline? It’s genius.

  2. Coleen Patrick

Looks like a great list! I wrote mine down this morning–I’m excited, but a tad nervous because it seems like a lot.
    Good luck Fabio!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Thanks, Diane! And I didn’t add “watch less TV” or “eat healthy” to the list…

  3. Emma Burcart

Wow! That sounds like a lot. I wonder when you’ll have time to sleep! I’m going to adopt the 1k a day goal & support fellow bloggers, but internet time is going to be limited to an hour for me. I need 8 hours of sleep!

  4. Marcia

With your level of enthusiasm, there’s no doubt you’ll accomplish all of these goals, Fabio! Go for it! Your fellow ROWers will be there keeping you motivated!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Thanks, Ginger! That’s the thing with ROW80: you need a way to track your progress. Glad you stopped by!

  5. Sheila Seabrook

Wonderful goals, Fabio! I decided against joining ROW80 this time around, but I’m going to be watching all my fellow WANA1011 ‘s progress. :)

  6. Barbara McDowell

Your goals are absolutely doable, Fabio! I especially love “have at all times a stash of 15 blog topics and 5 blog posts ready in advance.” That is the way to have the feed covered if/when life steps in. I need to aim towards a goal like that.

Thanks for popping by my blog because it gave me the chance to return the favor. Love it! Especially your occasional blogging “evil twin” (I’ve got one too) and the shout out to super powers and Wonder Woman (I wanted to be her). :-)

    1. Fabio Bueno

Hi, Barbara! The blog post stash I learned from Kristen Lamb.
My evil twin has been gone for a while, but he might show up any time. Evil twins are unpredictable, right? : )

  7. Jessica Fritsche

Great goals, Fabio! You already know I am a fan of the specific and measurable goal. :-) Best of luck to you this round…I look forward to sharing our progress!

    1. Fabio Bueno

I’m glad you stopped by, Jessica! I believe that detailing the goals make them easier to achieve. Now, let’s work! :)

  8. Juliana Haygert

Hi Fabio, welcome to Row80! I’m glad you found us and decided to join us!
Great goals you have there. I’m sure you’ll be able to meet them all and more ;)
    Just added you on twitter.
    Good luck!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Hi, Juliana! Thank you for your support. I look forward to reading your blog posts and tweets :-)

  9. mgmillerbooks

You’re a machine, Fabio! lol. You’ll do it, too, I’ve no doubt. Wishing you the best, and raising a new year’s glass to you. Cheers!

  10. Tameri Etherton

Awesome goals, Fabio! Your #4 under Writing has me intrigued… I hope you’ll be explaining it more in an upcoming post. Until then, write on!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Thanks, Tameri! As for #4: I need to have a career plan. I need lists, goals, checkpoints. Just like ROW80 helps me with short-term goals, a career plan lets me see the bigger picture.

  11. Louise Behiel

Great goals, Fabio. Keep us posted on how you’re doing – altho I have no doubt you’ll accomplish every one of them.

    1. Fabio Bueno

I have no option–I must keep you posted, actually :-) That’s the beauty of it.
      Thanks for the incentive!

  12. Natalie Hartford

Welcome to the ROW80 crew Fabio – I know you are going to love it. Your goals are fantastic and measurable and I think you’ll do great. I love your ambition with advance blog posts and love the social media goal but with a time LIMIT! Very smart because it’s so easy to lose yourself in hours of blog hopping!
Woot woot – here’s to rocking out the ROW80!

    1. Fabio Bueno

I must give credit to Kristen Lamb for the idea of blog posts in advance, and to Angela Peart for the idea of time limit on social media.
Well, I’ll take credit for listening to good advice :-)
Thank you so much for the support, Natalie!

  13. Lena Corazon

Fabio, I’m so glad to see that you’ve joined ROW80! I’ve been part of the fun for the last couple of rounds, and it’s really transformed my writing and given me a much-needed community and support base (I don’t think I would’ve taken — or known about — Kristen’s class if I hadn’t been part of ROW80).

All of your goals look fantastic (especially that bit about a time limit for social media). Here’s to a great Round 1!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Lena, I’m glad ROW80 helped you achieve your goals. So far I’m loving it. The time limit is one of the things I’m having most trouble with, to be honest. Blog hopping is addictive!

  14. Alicia Street

Impressive, Fabio! I belong to two groups where support and goals factor in, but ROW80 sounds wonderful. I’m already amazed at your blogging skills, since mine are still in the infancy stage. And the time suck of social media is definitely a danger. Which is why I must get back to my WIP right now.
Wishing you a productive and prolific new year!

    1. Fabio Bueno

Alicia, thanks for your kind words! Could you tell us more about those groups? (I’m nosy, I know).

  15. Angela Orlowski-Peart

Awesome set of goals, my friend. Welcome to Row80 – you will love it. Is code “Blue” for the new WIP that we read at the meeting a few weeks ago? Or is it something new?

    1. Fabio Bueno

People, it was Angela who told me first about ROW80. She made me do it! :-)
Code “Blue” is the book you critiqued a couple of months ago. The new one is Codename “Crimson” (I know, I know, I have a thing for colors).

      1. Angela Orlowski-Peart

I’m so glad you took my advice and signed up for Row80. I totally believe in it – it simply works, if you want it to work.
Ah, *bangs head on the keyboard* of course, duh. “Blue”! How could I not put two and two together. Excuse me while I apply some ice to my forehead.

  16. relatedreality

Hello to you! You have some great goals set! :) I look forward to keeping up with your progress!! Best wishes to you fellow ROW80er! :)

  17. Nadja Notariani

Welcome to ROW80, Fabio! Great to meet you. You’ve got some terrific goals for word count and planning. Five tousand words per week is no trifle. That’s almost NaNoWriMo pace. Impressive, sir! Best of luck to you, and I look forward to following your progress through this round.

    1. Fabio Bueno

Nice to meet you, Nadja! You’re right, I’m shooting for a high word count, but I’ve been able to do it in the past (just not for long stretches :-) ). With your support, I think I can do it regularly now.

  19. Kecia Adams

Well done, Fabio! I envy your specificity. :) It’s great to have a place to create that accountability, isn’t it?

    1. Fabio Bueno

Hi, Kecia. I had to be specific: my main problem was “writing in bursts”: 100 words one day; 2,000 the next. I needed a way to create a healthy habit :-)
