I’m sorry that you just had your heart broken. It pains me to tell you it will not be the only time. But, if it’s any consolation, it’ll be the worst you will ever experience: it’ll never be more crushing than that.
You’ll get tougher and your skin, thicker. Don’t worry: you won’t turn into a cynic, a loner, or a player. You’ll just be able to handle these disappointments better.
I’m not trying to diminish it. Her leaving was bewildering to both your logical side and your emotional side. I know those sides are often at odds; it’s sad that the only time they agree on something is when you suffer such a loss.
No, talking to people won’t help you. Neither will drinking, hiding in your bedroom, being angry, or crying. Here’s a suggestion: write about it. It’ll help you process what happened and make you feel better. Writing is good. You should do it more often. It’ll come in handy later in life. How, you ask? Let’s put a pin on that.
I know it sounds like wishful thinking right now, but it will get better. I don’t want to spoil it for you. Let’s just say that destiny prepared a good surprise for you. Remember that list you wrote at the beach while daydreaming? About all the things you seek in someone? Wait a few years.
You won’t regret it.
P.S.: at a certain point, a company called Apple (they make the Macintosh; you saw one) will be nearly bankrupt. Around 2001, their stock will be at their lowest point. Buy as many shares as you can. Thank me later.
All the best,
What would YOU tell your 16 y.o. self?
